NEW DELHI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Human rights watchdog Amnesty International on Thursday temporarily closed its offices and postponed programs in India.
The rights body officials said they had been asked by police to avoid visiting offices, fearing attacks from rightwing Hindu groups affiliated with the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party.
"Police officials told us they anticipate attacks on our offices," Himanshi Matta, media officer of Amnesty International India, told Xinhua. "So based on police advice, we are asking our staff to work from other locations as a precautionary measure."
The London-based rights body has been engaged in raising awareness of rights abuses in India.
