SYDNEY, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Jetstar Dreamliner fleets are flying with a known engine problem that can trigger mid-flight shutdowns and other catastrophic consequences.

NewsCorp reported on Thursday that Jetstar fleets have been experiencing engine issues, leading to a loss of oil pressure, since March this year.

It is believed that almost half of the Jetstar's Dreamliner fleets come with engine problems.

So far repairs have been made to 11 of its 24 General Electric-made GEnx engines, the report said.

However, the repair figures were disputed by a Jetstar spokesman who declined to elaborate further.

"A service bulletin issued early this year by General Electric to operators of Dreamliner's fitted with the GEnx engine said the issue related to a problem with the 'transfer gearbox'," added the report.

Xinhua had recently reported of Jetstar demanding an explanation from GE after a near-new engine had to be shut down during a mid-air flight from Tokyo to Gold Coast.

The GEnx model engine fitted on a Boeing 787 had to be shut down after a warning light appeared indicating oil pressure problems on a flight earlier this month, prompting it to be diverted to Guam.
