RAMADI, Iraq, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Seven border guards and a civilian were killed on Tuesday in a mortar barrage by Islamic State (IS) militants near the border between Iraq and Jordan, a security source said.
The militants fired mortar rounds before dawn on the base of the border guards near a border crossing point of Trebil, a villiage in Iraq's western province of Anbar, the provincial source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The attack came as the Iraqi security forces and allied paramilitary tribal units are fighting to drive IS militants out of the province after they reclaimed key cities and towns, including the provincial capital of Ramadi and Fallujah, the source said.
Iraq has witnessed worsening violence since the IS took control of parts of its northern and western regions in June 2014.
