Profile: Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi will pay an official visit to China on Aug. 17-21 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The following is a brief introduction of the Myanmar leader:

Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Yangon in June 1945. She is the youngest daughter of Aung San, leader of Myanmar's independence movement.

She formed the National League for Democracy (NLD) and became its General Secretary in 1988, a position she held until 2011.

Aung San Suu Kyi again took the helm of the NLD after its re-registration in 2012. She took over the roles of Foreign Affairs Minister and President's Office Minister in March 2016 and has been serving as State Counselor from April 2016.

Aung San Suu Kyi visited China in June 2015 as chair of the NLD.
