LAGOS, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops operating in parts of the restive northeast Borno state successfully repelled and killed 16 Boko Haram insurgents and recovered several items, the Nigerian Army said Monday.
The attack was launched in Kangarwa area of the state by the suspected terrorists at about 5:30 p.m., local time on Sunday, the Army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement made available to Xinhua, noting that the alert troops rose to the occasion and dealt a decisive blow on the insurgents.
"Weapons recovered from the insurgents include one Rocket Propelled Grenade seven tube, one Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb, 11 AK-47 Rifle, a 60mm Mortar tube, a dozen of 60mm Mortar bombs, a 36 Hand Grenade, five AK-47 rifle magazines, one Gionee Handset and one Bandolier," Usman said.
According to him, an officer and 11 soldiers were wounded in action during the encounter.
The Army spokesperson said troops will continue to intensify vigilance and high level of alertness through patrols and reconnaissance.
