LUSAKA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's electoral body on Thursday extended the voting period in some polling stations in a bid not to disfranchise voters.

Electoral Commission of Zambia director Pricilla Isaacs said during a press briefing that the voting period has been extended in polling stations which opened late and in polling stations where people were still on the queue by the close of the official ending period at 6 p.m. Thursday.

This year's general election has recorded a high voter turnout with long queues witnessed in many of the 7,700 polling stations across the country.

About 6.7 million voters turned up to vote for a president, lawmakers, local councilors and city mayors and in a referendum meant to amend part three of the constitution which deals with people's rights.
