Baking Beijing sets new record in energy demand

Source: Xinhua   2016-08-11 22:38:31

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A heat wave in north China has pushed electricity use in Beijing to an all-time high, the local power company said on Thursday.

Peak load in Beijing hit 20.7 million kilowatts (kW) at 11:23 a.m. Thursday, breaking the previous high of 19.6 million kW on July 11, according to State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company.

The company blamed the high demand mainly on air conditioners, as temperatures have crept ever higher in recent days. A national regulation restricts air conditioners to temperatures no lower than 26 degrees, but the rule is not widely implemented.

Power supplies are in good condition, and since summer began, the company has had over 3,000 emergency repair personnel on standby. Since the beginning of this year, Beijing has witnessed a total of 23 cases of electrical faults caused by building works.
