BANGKOK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Five people were seriously injured in a blast in downtown area of Trang province in southern Thailand, police said on Thursday.

The victims, including local vendors, were rushed to hospital while the police were investigating the incident and the unknown bomber was still at large.

An explosive disposal unit went to the blast scene to identify the type of the bomb, which was believed to have been a drive-by attack, the police said.

The blast hit the downtown market in the neighborhood of the provincial government premises and the residence of the provincial police commander.

No violence has been reported in the relatively peaceful southern province, about 830 km south of Bangkok, in the past decades.

The police did not either confirm or deny the possibility that the bombing might have been connected with the political situation in which a new constitution had been adopted in Sunday's nationwide referendum.

Most local villagers in Trang are known as staunch supporters for former premier and ex-Democrat Party leader Chuan Leekpai, who was born and raised in the southern province.
