UNESCO chief arrives in Nigeria to strengthen ties

ABUJA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday for an official visit aimed at strengthening ties with the West African country.

Her visit to Nigeria is part of a series of official visits to West and Central Africa as UNESCO is supporting African states in their efforts to deepen stability, peace and prosperity, notably within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an official statement said.

During her visit, the UNESCO chief will hold talks with Nigerian leader Muhammadu Buhari as well as key officials, on ways to strengthen ties in education, culture, the sciences, communication and information, and in preventing violent extremism.

"The official visit will provide an opportunity to discuss ongoing cooperation with UNESCO in a number of key priorities for the organization and in relations to the AU Agenda 2063," added the statement released by the UN National Information Office. Enditem
