VIENNA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- No renewed surge in asylum seeker numbers entering Austria as had occurred in Autumn of 2015 is presently expected, a senior Austrian asylum coordinator said Tuesday.
Speaking to the Austria Press Agency, asylum coordinator from the city of Vienna Peter Hacker said while the city is currently catering for 20,400 asylum seekers, there is no new "peak" visible on the horizon.
"We have had a thoroughly quiet situation since the last half year, and low fluctuations," he said. "That will also be no different in the coming autumn and winter."
Despite that, he noted that there are some "incalculable factors" present, such as asylum reception centres on the EU outer borders or joint efforts for the distribution of asylum seekers in member states both not yet functional.
He was however pleased with government efforts towards improving asylum policy domestically, that have led to a more "pragmatic" approach under Chancellor Christian Kern.
