KHARTOUM, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Representatives of the Troika (Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States), Germany and the European Union have welcomed the signing of the African Union (AU) proposed roadmap agreement by the Sudanese opposition groups in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
"In signing the roadmap agreement, these groups have demonstrated a laudable commitment to ending the conflicts in Sudan and moving towards a process of dialogue as a basis for lasting peace in their country," the Troika said in a statement obtained by Xinhua Tuesday.
The Troika also commended the government of Sudan for signing the roadmap agreement on March 16, 2016.
It said "the roadmap agreement constitutes a valuable step towards ending the wars in Sudan," urging the signatories to lose no further time in agreeing a cessation of hostilities and modalities for humanitarian access in Darfur and the Two Areas.
The opposition Sudan Call, an alliance bringing together Sudanese armed groups and opposition parties, on Monday signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa the AU-proposed roadmap, ending months of controversy over the deal.
Representatives of the Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector and the leader of the Sudanese opposition National Umma Party signed the document of the deal in the presence of AU representatives.
Last March, the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel on Sudan (AUHIP) proposed a roadmap agreement for the Sudanese rivals aiming at ending the war in Sudan.
The Sudanese government unilaterally signed the roadmap agreement, but the Sudan Call then refused to sign the deal.
The roadmap stipulates arrangements related to ceasefire at South Kordofan, Blue Nile and Darfur regions, entering a peace process and involving the armed movements in the national dialogue currently convened in Khartoum. Enditem
