GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Six civilians, including three children, were killed in an explosion in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni on Monday, police said.

"An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) struck a tricycle at around 9:00 a.m. local time along a road in Ghazni's Gilan district. As a result six people aboard the vehicle, including two women and three children, lost their lives," Fahim Amarkhil, provincial police spokesman, told Xinhua.

He blamed enemies of Afghanistan, a term referring to the Taliban militants, for planting the IED in the roadside.

The Taliban has been using IEDs to target security forces but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians, according to military officials.

At least 10 civilians had been killed in similar attacks within the last one week across Afghanistan.

More than 1,600 civilians were killed and over 3,560 injured in the first half of the year as the violence spread in different places of the country, according to a report by the UN mission in Afghanistan released last month.
