Flying start for Chinese table tennis in Rio 2016, top Japanese girl ousted

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Table tennis powerhouse China opened their Rio Olympic journey in style here on Sunday with both Ding Ning and Ma Long winning in straight sets, while Japan' s top woman Kasumi Ishikawa and Chinese Taipei's number one Chuang Chih-Yuan suffered third round exits.

World No. 2 women's singles player Ding came back from trailing 6-0 in the second set to overcome the mid-way thriller, before wrapping up a 11-5, 11-8, 11-5, 11-2 victory over Romania's world No. 29 Elizabeth Samara in just 11 minutes.

"I'm a little bit nervous since it's my opening game," said the 26-year-old top seed, who lost to fellow Chinese Li Xiaoxia in the women's singles final of London 2012.

"But I' m quite satisfied with my following performance, especially that I kept calm when my opponent caught a double of edge balls to improve from 4-0 to 6-0.

"I' ve prepared to face any unexpected situations since anything is possible on court," said the 2011 and 2015 world champion, who collapsed after penalized for serving four years ago in the Olympic final.

Ding will next play Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong, China in the fourth round after the latter ousted Georgina Potaof Hungary 4-2 on Sunday evening.

Two hours later, world No. 1 male paddler Ma Long set up a fourth round rivalry against South Korea's Jeoung Young Sik after beating Jonathan Groth of Denmark 11-3, 11-2, 11-3, 11-9 in 19 minutes.

Jeoung came back from one set down to trounce Briton Liam Pitchford 6-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-5, 11-5 in a little bit beyond half an hour to make through to his next round.

Later on, the men' s fifth seed Chuang was beaten in straight sets by ITTF' s 2015 Player of the Year Aruna Quadri of Nigeria, who was ranked world No. 40, and the 11th-seeded Tang Peng of Hong Kong, China lost to the hosts Brazil' s Hugo Calderano 4-2.

The biggest upset came up in the evening when women's singles fourth seed Ishikawa lost in full sets to DPR Korea' s chopper Kim Song I.

It took 64 minutes of the world No. 50 Kim to wrap up the match 7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8.

With two sets up in the beginning of the third round match, Ishikawa, 23, lost two sets in a row before drawn into the decisive seventh set which she was beaten 11-8 in 10 minutes.

"My opponent is just strong and I failed to cope well with her playing style," said the tearing Japanese, whose leg cramped while leading 7-4 in the decider.

Also on Sunday, Singapore' s Gao Ning, seeded the 26th, lost to Paul Drinkhall of Britain 4-1 in the afternoon.

Other seeds suffering an early exits include Robert Gardos of Austria, Poland's Wang Zengyi,Turkey' s Li Ahmet, Emmanuel Lebesson of France and Swede Par Gerell in the men's singles, as well as the Portuguese duo Yu Fu and Shao Jieni, Sofia Polcanova of Austria, Poland's Li Qian and Spain's Shen Yanfei in the women's singles.
