Tornado, heavy rain triggered by Typhoon Nida kill 2 in northern Vietnam

HANOI, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Tornado and heavy rain triggered by Typhoon Nida has killed two people in Vietnam's northern Lao Cai province, some 250 km northwest of capital Hanoi.

Typhoon Nida made landfall at 3:35 a.m. Tuesday at the Dapeng Peninsula in the city of Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, local weather authorities said.

According to a steering committee on natural disaster control, search and rescue of Lao Cai's Muong Khuong district, one people was killed and three others were injured by lightning.

The injured were hospitalized, with two in serious conditions, Vietnamese government's e-Portal reported on Wednesday.

Also in Lao Cai's Bao Thang district, at 16:00 local time on Tuesday, a tornado left 14 houses collapsed and unroofed. One was killed during a house collapse.

According to Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, due to the impact of Typhoon Nida, Vietnamese northern region including Cao Bang, Lang Son, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Phong, Hai Duong provinces are suffering from heavy rain from Tuesday night.

Torrential rain is expected to occur in Vietnam's northwestern region with total rainfall of 100-200 millimeters. In some areas, it may exceed 250 millimeters. Rain will last till the end of Thursday, said the center.
