ISLAMABAD, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is scheduled to hold talks with Pakistani leaders in Islamabad later on Tuesday on the situation arising out of the failed military coup in Turkey, officials said.
Cavusoglu arrived in Islamabad early Tuesday on his first visit since the coup attempt by some military officers was frustrated by the people on July 15.
Pakistan was among the countries which had condemned the attempted coup and had announced support for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At least 246 people were killed in clashes during the attempt.
Officials said the Turkish foreign minister is leading a high level delegation in his day-long visit and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and hold formal talks with Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz.
The Turkish foreign minister will also hold meetings with several other ministers to discuss matters of bilateral cooperation and regional and international issues.
Cavusoglu told the Pakistani state media on his arrival that bilateral relations and regional developments between Pakistan and Turkey will be on the agenda during his visit.
Talking about the failed coup attempt, he told the Pakistani official APP news agency that, "It was the people of Turkey from all backgrounds and political views who thwarted the plot. In short, the people of Turkey have proven their patriotism and commitment to democracy."
Answering a question on Pakistan- China Economic Corridor, he said Turkey welcomes the cooperation between Pakistan and China in that regard.
On Afghanistan, he said as one of the main pillars of the political transition and a key to lasting peace in Afghanistan and for regional stability, "the successful conclusion of the Peace and Reconciliation Process is vital."
