MAIMANA, Afghanistan, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A district police chief along with one policeman has been killed in a bomb attack in Afghanistan's northern province of Faryab, police said on Tuesday.
"Sakhi Daad Usmani, police chief of Khwaja Sabz Posh District, and one police officer were killed Monday night after his vehicle was struck by a landmine along a road in the district," Sayyed Sarwar Hussainee, spokesman of Afghan National Police (ANP) in northern region, told Xinhua.
Usmani was inspecting security checkpoints in surrounding areas of the district when his convoy was ambushed by a landmine and an ensuing clash, Hussainee added.
Some four Taliban rebels were killed and one police injured in the subsequent gunfight in the province, 425 km northwest of Afghan capital of Kabul, according to the spokesman.
The province has been the scene of sporadic clashes between Afghan security forces and militants over the past couple of months.
The Afghan security forces' casualties have risen recently as they struggle against a surge in attacks by Taliban and other anti-government fighters.
