Brazil lobby FIFA for new over-age player in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Brazil have sought permission to call up a player not included in their preliminary 35-man Olympic football squad after goalkeeper Fernando Prass was ruled out of the Rio 2016 tournament with an elbow injury.

The Brazilian football confederation said that it should be allowed to replace 38-year-old Prass with another mature-age player.

Olympic football squads are only permitted to have three players over the age of 23. Brazil's other over-age players for the Rio Games are Neymar and Renato Augusto.

"We have made a request to FIFA, due to the fact the player [Prass] was one of the three over-age players," Brazilian team spokesperson Erasmo Damiani told reporters on Sunday.

Prass, who plays for Brazilian Serie A club Palmeiras, hurt his right elbow while training with Brazil's squad last Monday.

He aggravated the injury while warming up before Brazil's friendly clash with Japan on Saturday. Tests later showed a fracture that will rule him out for several weeks.

"I did everything I could to realize my dream, but unfortunately it wasn't to be," Prass said on social media.

Local press reported that the CBF is targeting Valencia stopper Diego Alves to replace Prass.

Brazil named three other goalkeepers in their preliminary squad: Jean (Bahia), Jordi (Vasco da Gama) and Alisson (Roma).

The hosts will debut at the Rio 2016 Games against South Africa in Brasilia on August 4.
