Singapore's former President S R Nathan in critical condition

SINGAPORE, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's former President S R Nathan suffered a stroke on early Sunday morning, said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement.

PMO said the former president is in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital.

Nathan, 92, was the sixth and longest-serving president in Singapore, and was in office for two terms from 1999 to 2011.

Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam updated his Facebook, saying he is sad to hear about Nathan's hospitalization on Sunday morning. President Tan wrote that "our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family."
