THE HAGUE, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch military police has stepped up a massive security check Saturday morning on the roads toward Amsterdam Airport Schiphol due to a terror threat signal, causing traffic jams along the road.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer, in which Airport Schiphol is located, stepped up security measures in consultation with the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV).

"The signal suits the current threat level of substantial," said the municipality in a press release. "Measures, visible and invisible, are being taken."

Dutch military police, the Royal Marechaussee, checked almost all cars on the nearby ways to Schiphol and was on extra alert in the airport.

The checks caused long traffic jams and some people decided to walk to the airport, afraid of missing their flights on one of the busiest travel days of the year due to the holidays.

The current "substantial" terrorist threat level in the Netherlands means there is a real chance of a terrorist attack, but there have been no direct indications of that.
