SUVA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Crime rate in Fiji decreased by 6 percent in the first half of 2016 compared with the same period of 2015, the Pacific island nation's police chief said Friday.

A total of 10,095 crime cases were recorded and registered in the first six months of 2016, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said at a press conference.

The first half of 2016 also saw a drop in road fatalities, he said.

"Reduction of fatalities, 23 percent achieved, falling just short of the 30 percent target. Speeding, once again, tops the list of main causes of accidents. Fifteen of the 24 lives lost were due to speeding," Qiliho said.

Crimes against children and women were down by 2 percent, but children as young as three to five months continued to be victims of crimes such as assault, the police chief said.
