ANKARA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar would remain in his post after the July 15 coup attempt, the president's spokesperson said on Thursday.
Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin made the announcement after the Supreme Military Council (YAS) convened earlier in the day.
The spokesperson said most of the generals remained in their posts.
More than 8,600 soldiers, making up 1.5 percent of the military's total personnel, took part in the failed coup attempt, the Turkish General Staff said.
A total of 1,684 military personnel, including generals, were discharged from Turkish armed forces on Wednesday.
Discharged military personnel were identified as members or related to the Fethullahist Organization.
The U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen is accused by Ankara of plotting the July 15 coup attempt.
Turkish authorities said at least 290 people died in the coup, including more than 100 "coup plotters."
