BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Global and Chinese auto makers have recalled a record 8.8 million defective vehicles in the first half of the year, more than double the number for the same period last year.

China recalled 5.59 million defective vehicles in 2015, according to Yan Fengmin, a department director in charge of law enforcement with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), on Thursday.

Over 34 million vehicles have been recalled since China began the recall system in 2004, according to Yan.

Of the 103 recalls in H1 this year, 29 were due to airbag defects, involving nearly 4.9 million vehicles. Engine problems were another major reason for recall, involving over 2.2 million vehicles.

Japanese auto makers recalled the largest number of vehicles at nearly 5.7 million units in 40 batches; followed by U.S. carmakers' 2.5 million units in 16 batches; and German automakers' 458,900 units in 23 batches.

China is the world's biggest auto market. In H1 this year, China sold 12.83 million vehicles, up 8.14 percent year on year.

In 2015, auto makers sold 24.59 million vehicles in China, up 4.7 percent year on year. It was the slowest pace in three years, following a 6.9-percent rise in 2014 and a 13.9-percent gain in 2013.
