MEXICO CITY, July 27 (Xinhua) -- An 86-year-old Mexican drug lord will be moved from prison to serve the remainder of his 40-year sentence under house arrest, Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said Wednesday.
Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo's transfer is imminent after federal prosecutors lost their appeal to keep him in prison, Chong told reporters.
"By order of a judge, we have been instructed to liberate him to serve the rest of his sentence at home," the minister said.
A court has ruled that Fonseca, who was imprisoned in 1985 for his involvement in the torture and death of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent, should be allowed to serve the remaining nine years of his sentence at home.
Fonseca, along with drug lords Rafael Caro Quintero and Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, led the now-defunct Guadalajara cartel, which dominated Mexico's drug trade in the 1970s and 80s.
