LUXEMBOURG, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Luxembourg on Tuesday welcomed the first group of refugees relocated from Italy, according to the Luxembourg government on Wednesday.

The 20 people, including 15 adults and five children, were among the 557 refugees that Luxembourg pledged to receive from Greece and Italy by the end of 2017.

Luxembourg has already resettled 39 asylum seekers from Greece.

The action falls under the plan set out in September 2015 by the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which agreed to redistribute a total of 40,000 refugees to other EU countries from Greece and Italy.

The member states participating in the mechanism will receive a lump sum of 6,000 euros (about 6,660 U.S. dollars) for each relocated person.

In the first six months of 2016, Luxembourg has in total received 893 new applicants for international protection. Enditem
