RAMADI, Iraq, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 31 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed on Wednesday in airstrikes targeting the extremist militants in Iraq's western province of Anbar, a provincial security source said.

The international warplanes bombarded a convoy of five IS vehicles at a village in north of the town of Baghdadi, some 190 km northwest of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, destroying the vehicles and killing 16 IS militants, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Another airstrike struck an IS position in Jazirat al-Khaldiyah area in northwest of the newly-freed city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, killing eight IS militants, the source said.

Also in the province, seven IS militants were killed when U.S.-led coalition aircraft attacked IS position in Albu Ali al-Jasim area in north of the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, the source added.

Government troops and allied militias have been fighting for months to reclaim key cities and towns from IS militants in the province of Anbar, including Ramadi and Fallujah, as militants attempted to approach Baghdad after seizing most of the province.

Iraq has witnessed worsening violence since the IS took control of parts of its northern and western regions in June 2014.
