COLOMBO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's defence ministry on Tuesday vowed to solve the issues faced by disabled soldiers after they have protested in the capital for two days.

The disabled and retired soldiers protested near the city's main railway station disrupting traffic.

Police were forced to close one section of the road as the protesters refused to leave until their demands were met.

Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi met President Maithripala Sirisena and discussed the concerns of the disabled soldiers.

Brigadier Prasana Samarasekera of the Ministry of Defence told reporters that the main demand of the protesting soldiers was to be granted a pension scheme for them.

He said that the issue had been discussed at the highest levels and a solution was being worked on but it will take time.

Hettiarachchi met the soldiers and briefed them on the proposed solution.

Hundreds of soldiers were disabled during a 30-year war between Tamil Tiger rebels and the military, which ended in 2009, leaving thousands of fighters and civilians killed.
