TOKYO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as slumping oil prices dragged U.S. shares down overnight and darkened the market mood here, with the yen's comparative strength against the U.S. dollar doing little to motivate investors.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 237.25 points, or 1.43 percent, from Monday to end the day at 16,383.04.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, relinquished 18.42 points, or 1.39 percent, to close at 1,306.94.
Trading volume on the main section hit 1,910.84 million shares rising from Monday's volume of 1,685.40 million shares.
On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,470 to 405, with notable decliners at the close of play comprising securities, iron and steel and mining-linked shares.
The day's turnover was 2,327.8 billion yen (22.33 billion U.S. dollars).
