Nine militants killed in Bangladeshi capital raid

DHAKA, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Nine suspected militants were killed as Bangladeshi law enforcers early Tuesday conducted a raid on a hideout of militants in capital Dhaka.

They also arrested some suspected militants with huge explosives and grenades.

Sources said the militants fired and lobbed hand-made grenades as policemen and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members stormed the hideout at about 5:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

Lots of communication equipments and jihadi books were seized during the raid on an apartment in Dhaka's downtown Kalyanpur area.

It was not known whether there were any casualties on the side of security forces.

"Nine militants were killed during the special operation of the joint forces in Dhaka's Kalyanpur area this morning," said an official of Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police who preferred to be unnamed.

He said since early Tuesday that law enforcers cordoned off a building on receipt of information that militants were hiding there.

No further details were immediately available.
