SYDNEY, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Australia's whale migration season has begun in earnest along with several individual sightings along the eastern coastline in recent days, including the much loved Migaloo, the nation's most adored white humpback whale.
Australia's eastern coastline comes alive with acrobatic displays of humpback whales as they migrate north to mate and give birth between June and August, before returning to Antarctic waters between September and November to hunt for krill during the southern hemisphere's summer.
While a plethora of humpback whales make the annual migration, on Monday whale watchers were greeted with a sighting of a rare southern right whale in Botany Bay, just south of Sydney's Central Business District.
It's believed it is the same whale spotted just inside Sydney Harbour several days ago, the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Services said in a statement.
The whale watching season is a boon for tourism operators capitalizing on the recovering humpback whale population that was all but decimated when Australia banned whaling in 1963.
As such, tour groups in Queensland state are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the famed white whale Migaloo who's been spotted along the northern New South Wales coastline.
