CHANGSHA, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A landslide-triggered barrier lake has formed in central China's Hunan Province, threatening the safety of a downstream reservoir and forcing 77 residents to evacuate.
According to the provincial flood control office, the lake is located about 850 meters upstream from a small reservoir in Qiaotou Village, Zhangjiajie City. It began to take shape following a massive landslide on Wednesday caused by rainstorms.
The lake is 100 meters long, 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep with about 3,000 cubic meters of water.
Rescuers are taking emergency measures to lower the water level of the reservoir before strong rainfall predicted for the area hits. Enditem
