Lee Chong Wei and Carolina Marin top seeds in Rio Olympics badminton event

BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei and Spain's Carolina Marin are confirmed as the top seeds for the Olympic badminton competition, based on the latest world rankings released on Thursday.

The seedings will be used for the draw of five categories on July 26 as each singles category has 13 seeds.

Lee, runner-up of the last two Olympics and the winner of two world superseries titles this season, is followed in men's seedings by China's two-time world champion Chen Long and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan.

In women's singles, two-time world champion Marin heads the field in front of China's Wang Yihan and defending Olympic champion Li Xuerui.

Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, winner of three world superseries titles this year, was relieved to be cleared of doping this week and is women's singles seed no.4. India's Saina Nehwal, Japan's Nozomi Okuhara, South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun and Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying are among the top eight.

In the doubles, there are only four seeds in each of the three categories. South Korea's Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong head the men's doubles seedings, followed by Indonesian world champions Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan. South Korea's Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang and China's Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan are seeded no.3 and no.4 respectively.

Japan's Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi lead in the women's doubles, followed by China's Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang. Indonesia's Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and South Korea's Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan secured seeded positions no.3 and no.4.

In the mixed doubles, defending champions Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China are top-seeded followed by South Korea's Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na, winners of the Singapore Open. The no.3 seeds are Indonesia's Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir, and Denmark's Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen are seeded no.4.
