DHAKA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government has instructed passenger vessels' owners to set up closed-circuit television (cctv) cameras and metal detectors at their vessels.

The country's Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan made the instruction at a program in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.

He also urged the authorities concerned to take all necessary measures to ensure safety of passengers.

The move came in the wake of a rising tide of militancy and first-ever hostage crisis in which 18 foreigners were killed earlier this month.

Panic now runs high among people in the capital and elsewhere in the country as they fear further terror attacks.

A crescendo of malicious rumours is reportedly circulating over potential attacks at busy and crowded zones like shopping malls and supermarkets.
