TOKYO, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed higher Tuesday with the Nikkei stock index rising to a one-and-a-half-month high, as U.S. record-high share indices and yen's depreciation boosted market sentiment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 225.46 points, or 1.37 percent, from Friday at 16,723.31, the highest close since June 8.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 14.29 points, or 1.08 percent, higher at 1,331.39.

Gainers were led by marine transportation, glass, paper and pharmaceutical issues.

The day's turnover was about 2,995.7 billion yen (around 28.3 billion U.S. dollars).
