ANKARA/ISTANBUL, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A person was shot dead by police at the Antalya Airport and a deputy mayor was seriously wounded in Istanbul on Monday, according to witnesses and local media.

At around 18:00 local time, a person was shot dead after he did not obey the stop order from police at the Antalya Airport, several witnesses said on social media on Monday.

In the meantime, the deputy mayor of Istanbul's district of Sisli was seriously wounded on Monday in an outbreak of gunfire inside the municipal building, Turkish media reported.

The incident, in which two attackers believed to be entrepreneurs opened fire inside the building, was adding to a sense of chaos in a metropolis still smarting from a failed military coup.

Deputy Mayor Cemil Candas was rushed to hospital, while the attackers were detained in a police operation, the Haberturk daily said.

The cause of the attack was not known yet, it noted.

The outbreak of gunfire is not rare in Istanbul these days, as the authorities are cracking down on those suspected of involvement in the coup attempt on Friday night and early Saturday morning, which mostly swept Istanbul and the capital of Ankara.

Meanwhile, a military officer who allegedly participated in the failed coup attempt was detained by police after an armed clash in Ankara on Monday, Hurriyet News reported.

The incident began when police attempted to detain a suspect holding a gun in front of a hospital in Ankara.

The suspect, who was identified as a military officer who allegedly participated in the coup attempt, wounded a civilian and hijacked his car.

He parked the car a while later and attempted to take another car owned by local citizen Mehmet Nevzat Alkan. However, he pointed the gun at Alkan's head and took him hostage after he could not escape further.

The suspect was detained by police after being shot. The owner of the first car later succumbed to his wounds, while two police officers were also wounded in the clashes.

Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has suspended the annual leave of more than three million civil servants nationwide until further notice, according to a government order published on Monday.

The order, published in Turkey's Official Gazette, comes amid a wide-ranging government operation on the civil service, judiciary, police and armed forces following the failed coup attempt. Enditem
