BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua)-- Lao Defense Minister Chansamone Chanyalath expressed support for China on the South China Sea issue when meeting with senior Chinese military officials in Beijing on Monday.

Chansamone Chanyalath told vice chairman of the Central Military Commission Xu Qiliang that Laos always supports China on the South China Sea and looks forward to a peaceful resolution.

Chansamone Chanyalath made the remarks after a ruling of an international tribunal in The Hague against China's rights in the South China Sea territories.

China's territorial sovereignty and maritime interests in the South China Sea, in any circumstances, will not be affected by the award, Xu said.

He appreciated the just and fair stance of Laos and the country's strong support for China on the issue.

Calling China and Laos "good neighbors, friends, comrades and partners," Xu said the Chinese military stands ready to deepen friendly cooperation with Laos to contribute to the national security of both sides and regional stability.

Chansamone Chanyalath reaffirmed that Laos will continue a friendly policy toward China and promote new development of military relations between the countries.

On Monday, the Lao defense minister also held talks with his Chinese counterpart Chang Wanquan and pledged closer cooperation between the two militaries.

"The Chinese military is willing to maintain mutual high-level visits and boost practical cooperation with Laos to guarantee each other's national security and development," Chang said.
