NEW DELHI, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A senior legislator of Indian-controlled Kashmir's ruling People's Democratic Party sustained injuries in a violent attack on his car in the wee hours of Monday.

"Mohammad Khalil Bandh was on his way to state capital Srinagar around 1 a.m. (local time) when his car flipped over following an attack by a mob that started throwing stones on the vehicle. He has been admitted to Army hospital in Srinagar," a senior police official said, on condition of anonymity.

Many ruling party lawmakers have been the target of violence recently over the killing of 22-year-old Burhan Wani of Hizbul Mujahideen, the poster boy of new militancy in Indian-controlled Kashmir, in a police operation on July 8.

More than 40 people have been killed and nearly 2,000 others injured so far in clashes with Indian security forces since Wani's killing. The region has been under curfew for the past 10 days and mobile and Internet services have been suspended in various parts of the region.

The Indian government has been battling to contain violence in the region though almost all parties, cutting across political lines, have come together in its support.
