GENEVA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann on Friday firmly condemned the attack which struck the southern French town of Nice Thursday evening.

"Switzerland strongly condemns the cowardly attack in Nice. We stand together with France and its population," the president wrote in a tweet in the early hours of the morning.

The tragedy took place at the city's famous Promenade des Anglais seafront, when a truck ploughed at high speed into spectators watching fireworks in celebration of Bastille Day, a French national holiday.

According to reports, identity papers of a 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian male, in addition to weapons and grenades, were found in the heavy truck.

The perpetrator was shot dead after opening fire at police. Anti-terror investigations have been instigated by French authorities.

Initial reports indicate that over 80 people, including children, were killed. Many of the wounded remain in critical condition.
