MONTEVIDEO, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay bolstered its reputation as Latin America's most progressive nation as the Global LGBTI Human Rights Conference opened in Montevideo on Wednesday.
The conference, co-chaired by the Netherlands, aims to "share information, best practices and lessons learned in the promotion and protection of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people around the world," reads the event's website.
"We are gathered to ratify cultural changes for our countries, recalling the universality of human rights and basic freedoms which are intrinsic to everyone without exception," Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa told this three-day event.
"We also invited governments to join the coalition for the equality of LGBTI people to provide continuity to the effort of this and previous conferences."
Uruguay legalized same-sex marriage in 2013. While Latin America's overwhelmingly Catholic countries are known for being conservative, they have also shown great acceptance towards LGBTI communities.
