LUSAKA, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's soccer governing body said it will appoint a foreign coach for the national team despite the government saying it has no funds to meet the salary of a foreign trainer, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.

Last week, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) revealed that 17 foreign coaches have applied for the vacant job and that the list would be short-listed this week.

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ronald Chitotela earlier said the government has no funds to pay the salary of a foreign coach.

Ponga Liwewe, the general-secretary of the soccer governing body, said the process of selecting a foreign trainer will go ahead as planned as it waits a response from the government.

"We wrote to the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports but we have not gotten the response yet. We are still waiting for the response. But the process will go as planned," he was quoted as saying by the paper.

The Zambia team has had no coach since October 2013 when Frenchman Herve Renard ditched it. Since then, the team has been drilled by local coaches on caretaker basis. Enditem
