HANOI, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Corruption has caused an economic loss worth nearly 60 trillion Vietnamese dong (over 2.69 billion U.S. dollars) and over 400 hectares of land in the past ten years in Vietnam.

The information was released at a national conference on reviewing the 10-year implementation of anti-corruption law held in Hanoi on Tuesday.

Among the figures, over 4.67 trillion Vietnamese dong (209.42 million U.S. dollars) and over 219 hectares of land have been recovered, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.

The law on prevention and combating corruption was adopted by the Vietnamese parliament in 2005 and took effect on June 1.

In the past ten years, as many as 118 cases have been under criminal handling while 800 cases were disciplined.

Reports released at the conference showed weaknesses and limitations of Vietnam's socio-economic management policies, lack of transparency, existence of "ask-give mechanism" are among conditions for corruption to arise, especially in areas of land management, investment for construction, state budget management, state capital, state asset, staffing, credit and banking among others.

In some agencies, their leaders have not been drastic in instructing and carrying out anti-corruption work.

Efficiency of anti-corruption measures is not high, said the reports, adding that only 17 people are found dishonest in asset declaration in the past 10 years.

Speaking at the conference, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said corruption in Vietnam remains complicated in many levels and sectors.

Anti-corruption work with many limitations and shortcomings has not met up with demand and set target, said Binh.
