KHARTOUM, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's gold production for the first half of current 2016 has reached more than 45 tons, Sudan's Ministry of Minerals announced on Monday.

"The total gold production for the first half of this year has surpassed 45 tons. During this period the companies produced about seven tons and the traditional mining sector produced around 37 tons," the ministry said in its bi-annual performance report Monday.

The gold mining companies in the country amounted to 149, while companies operating in mining wastes amounted to 48, it noted.

The Sudanese government had previously anticipated the country's gold production to reach 100 tons in 2016, positioning Sudan as the second gold producing country in Africa and the ninth worldwide.

In February earlier this year, the United States drafted and introduced a resolution to the United Nations Security Council demanding sanctions be imposed on gold exports produced in Sudan.

However, the council postponed its examination of the drafted resolution. Enditem
