KATHMANDU, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Nepalese government is planning to introduce a ration card system to help the poor to get daily essentials at a cheaper price that what the market offers.

Once the system is introduced, cardholders will be able to buy daily essentials at subsidized rates from state-owned enterprises and cooperatives, according to the government officials.

Supply Ministry of Nepal said in a press release on Monday that it has formed a study committee under the ministry's Joint Secretary Uttam Prasad Nagila regarding the introduction of the system.

The committee has been given the task of studying the provision of such system in neighbouring countries, conducting study about the necessity and justification of introducing such a system and the measures to be taken by the government for successful implementation of the system.

Anandaram Regmi, spokesperson at the Supply Ministry told Xinhua that the government planned to introduce the ration card system to help people below the poverty as they are the ones who suffer most due to high market prices of daily essentials.

Nepal is currently witnessing double digit inflation particularly due to supply related constraints.
