CPHNOM PENH, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian political analyst Kem Ley was shot dead on Sunday near a gas station in Phnom Penh, National Police spokesman Lieutenant General Kirt Chantharith confirmed.

"Yes, the man who was shot dead is Kem Ley," the spokesman told Xinhua.

Gen. Chantharith said the police arrested a 33-year-old male suspect, whose shirt was stained with blood, and seized a pistol.

"The suspect confessed to the crime, saying that he got furious with Kem Ley, who owed him 3,000 U.S. dollars, but did not repay him," Chantharith said.

"We do not believe his confession yet, as an investigation is still going on."

Kem Ley was attacked in a mini-shop near the gas station where he was having a coffee.

Police said the victim suffered two or three shots on the back of his head at point-blank range and died on the spot.
