NEW DELHI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The government of India-controlled Kashmir has unearthed what it claims to be one of the biggest food scams after it identified more than 1,100,000 fake ration cards.

Ration cards give people access to the public distribution system, through which they can get essential food items like rice, pulses and sugar at subsidized rates.

"We have eradicated 11 lakh bogus ration cards and saved 5,500 quintals of ration per month," the northern state's Food Minister Choudhary Zulfikar told the media Friday.

In fact, the fake ration cards were identified during verification process and the government has now initiated more stringent checking.

However, authorities have not yet arrested anyone in the scam. "Arrests will take place once we have all the documents in place," a police official said.
