Vietnam calls on Thailand, other countries to boost cooperation in use of Mekong River water

HANOI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and Thailand need to further cooperate with each other and with other countries and international organizations in the development, management, sustainable and effective use of Mekong River water, a Vietnamese official proposed here on Friday.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made the proposal while holding talks with visiting Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.

According to Minh, such cooperation should be in accordance with international practice to ensure interests of lower Mekong River countries.

The two officials also agreed to enhance connectivity between the two economies, and coordinate to boost implementation of action plan on Vietnam-Thailand trade and investment cooperation during 2015-2020 period.

Vietnam and Thailand are striving to bring the bilateral trade revenue to some 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2020, reported the Vietnamese government's e-Portal.

At the invitation of Minh, The Thai foreign minister is visiting Vietnam from Thursday to Sunday on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Vietnam and Thailand established diplomatic relations in August 1976.
