BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors on Thursday discussed use of crop stalks to reduce the environmental pressure of discarding or burning them.

Members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee agreed that efficient use of stalks is crucial for relieving shortages of resources and reducing pressure on the environment, according to a statement released after their bi-weekly consultation session.

"Crop stalks are not waste, but both an important resource and an important source of energy," the statement said.

The advisors said provincial governments should make plans and standards on using stalks as fertilizer, fodder, fuel or raw materials.

The government should also offer policy support in terms of taxation, land use and transportation, and meanwhile enhance supervision over the comprehensive use, according to the statement.

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the seminar and gave a speech at the event.
