Over 10 people killed in monsoon-induced disasters in Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 5 (Xinhua) -- More than 10 people lost their lives on Tuesday by the monsoon-triggered landslides in various parts of Nepal.

According to local police officers, the landslide buried the house of 45-year-old Durga Bahadur Malla and killed his whole five-member family on the spot. Their bodies were recovered from the rubbles on Tuesday morning by a joint rescue team of Nepal Police and Nepal Red Cross Society.

Similarly, three from the same family died after a landslide collapsed their house in the northern side of Pyuthan district.

Meanwhile, three persons were killed after being buried by a landslide in Gorkha district. DSP Birendra Thapa at District Police Office Gorkha said that they were hit by the mudslide while constructing a road.

More than a half dozen were injured in the disaster.

According to the Home Ministry, 92 incidents of flood and landslides occurred across the country from mid-April till July 3. During the period, 32 persons lost their lives, 17 went missing and 48 were injured. Likewise, 104 houses were destroyed and 157 houses were partially damaged by floods and landslides during the period.

A panel of the Legislature-Parliament Monday directed the government to act immediately for management of monsoon-induced disasters by forming a special mechanism.

In response, the government said that it has mobilized three helicopters in three cities for immediate rescue and relief operation. Enditem
