NEW DELHI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday made a scathing attack on the main opposition Congress party, calling it "a sinking ship without a captain."

"The Congress is today like a sinking ship without a captain. It is facing rebellion in its ranks in many states and has faced electoral defeats everywhere in the last three years," BJP's national secretary Shrikant Sharma told the media in the national capital.

Dismissing the Congress party's description of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "a poster boy for broken promises," he said "The Congress is targeting the prime minister out of frustration as people have torn apart its posters everywhere."

"It is now reduced to ruling only 5 percent of the country's population. It is now a party of sycophants of a family," the BJP office-bearer said of Congress.

"The Modi government in its two years has lived up to its promise of being pro-poor and pro-farmers. It has lived up to its promises. It's all projects are dedicated to the welfare of farmers and poor."
