LUSAKA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- A top British official said on Friday that the relations with Zambia will not be affected following the United Kingdom (UK) decision to leave the European Union (EU).

British High Commissioner to Zambia Fergus Cochrane-Dyet said the UK "looks with confidence" to maintaining its partnership with the Zambian government and with Zambian businesses in the years ahead.

"The UK remains a globally engaged power. The UK remains the fifth largest economy in the world and a permanent member of the UN Security Council. The UK has considerable influence, too, through culture, education, science and in many other fields. Like Zambia, the UK is a member of the Commonwealth," the British envoy said in a statement.

Last week, the Zambian government said the bilateral relations with the UK would not be affected by the exit from the EU and that the trade and investment relations will continue. Enditem
