ARUSHA, Tanzania, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police on Wednesday killed three gangsters who claimed to have been involved in the vicious killings of eight people in Kibatini village on the outskirts of Tanga city.

Leonard Paul, Tanga Region Police Commander, said the gangsters were found hiding in Amboni caves, the most extensive limestone caves in East Africa located 8 km north of Tanga City.

The 150 million-year-old caves serve as tourist destinations, but in recent years, it has been used as a hiding place for gangsters.

"Before the killing there were exchange of fire between police and gangsters. When police asked the armed gangsters to surrender, they denied and started firing live bullets to police and police officers managed to kill them," according to the commander.

He said the killed suspects were in connection with those who were killed in Dar es Salaam because they have a network in their evil doings in various areas in the country.

He said the suspects were connected with the incidents of beheading of eight residents of Kibatini village and other burglary incidents in Tanga.

The regional police chief said that they would continue with the operation in various areas in the region to make sure that they deter other forms of crimes before they happen and had asked the residents to collaborate by informing to police whenever they see suspicious activities. Enditem
